6 FACTORS THAT SHAPE THE PRICE OF A CUSTOM RING

Center Stone

Main cost factor — often 40–70% of the ring’s price
Cost is determined by the type of stone (natural diamond, lab diamond, sapphire, etc.), as well as its size, cut quality, clarity, and color. Natural diamonds are priced significantly higher than lab-grown diamonds or sapphires of similar appearance. Some cuts require more material loss, which increases price. In natural gemstones, origin also matters — stones from rare or historic sources often carry a premium.

Metal Choice

Defines material cost, weight, and feel
Gold and platinum are priced by weight and purity. 14k gold is commonly used for engagement rings due to its balance of durability, strength, and cost-efficiency. Platinum is denser and heavier, which increases both its price and how it feels on the hand. Visually, white gold and platinum appear nearly identical because both are rhodium-plated. Color choice (yellow, white, rose) does not significantly affect price — but metal type and amount do.

Band & Setting

Design and structure influence metal use and labor
A ring’s band (or shank) determines how much metal is required. Minimalist bands generally use less material, while wider or double bands increase weight and cost. Structural elements — like cathedral shoulders, hidden under-galleries, or raised settings — may require additional labor or metal support. Adding side stones, pavé bands, or a halo setting introduces more gemstones and additional setting work. The impact on cost depends on the quantity, size, and whether the stones are natural or lab-grown. These design elements are entirely optional and flexible.

Custom Details & Engraving

Often low-cost additions with high design value
Elements like hand engraving, texture, milgrain edges, matte finishes, or hidden gemstones add strong personal character to a ring. These customizations rarely raise the price significantly unless highly intricate or time-intensive. They allow for emotional or symbolic detail without the need to change the core design or materials, making them a popular choice for adding meaning without altering overall structure.

Stone Shape & Cut

Stone shape determines how large a gem looks relative to its weight. Elongated cuts (oval, pear, marquise, emerald) often appear larger than round cuts of the same carat. Cut quality also affects brilliance and polish — especially in diamonds. Round stones are usually the most expensive due to higher demand and rough material loss during cutting.
